Blessings of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere to you all 🌞🌬️ The season has been cagey and undecided here in the PNW with mornings layered in frost and later a sun shining so brightly that no coat is needed. But the birds are convinced it's time to do what they do in Spring. Thankfully, there is song.

This Equinox, I felt called to do a rune throw (a reading) for the season. I often do throws for myself or others, in order to receive some inspiration, encouragement, or direction, but it felt right to listen to the runes’ message of the season for us all.

Runes are ancient symbols that both represent and carry energies of the Earth, the elements, and the Universe. Just like any oracular energies, they can help us better understand ourselves and what we’re going through, and they can lend support to us when we need it.

When I read the runes, I combine the knowledge I’ve internalized from sources with the meanings the runes have built with me through practice in order to understand what they are speaking in the moment. They land on the reading mat in a shape that shows me the flow of energy and relationships among them. As I’m reading them (feeling their energy), they let me know when I’m off track in my interpretation and give me more information.

The essence of the Equinox message I received was the rune that landed in the center of the throw: Laguz. In this reading, Laguz presented as an energy of a deep, dark lake—one with depths that are unknown to us. The energies of the other runes, except one that spun off the mat, moved around Laguz, relating to it and to one another depending on their placement and orientation. (I do not work with the runes that land face down when I do throws.)

Laguz at the center signifies a stillness. There’s a depth that we need to reach; this depth is unknown to us, and there is fear. We're not meant to plumb the depths at this point, but simply to get familiar with the feeling—sit in stillness, acknowledge the depths, and be willing to explore without getting answers.

Raido came spinning off the reading mat when I did the throw. This journey we’re moving through right now feels a little dizzying and fast. Sitting in that stillness of Laguz is going to be important for helping us to keep our heads about us during this time, and to balance out the energy of that spinning chaos.

Eiwaz landed in a formation with Ingwaz and Jera. From the depths of Laguz, there will be a seed planted in the community/collective. We’re currently reaping what we’ve sown in the past, and this new seed gradually is going to create a NEW harvest that will nourish the community, the world tree.

Othala is giving the energy that a “home base” is needed in order to sit with the depths of Laguz. This home base is not greater community; it’s home, hearth, family, ancestry, perhaps an altar space. It’s a safe space physically, mentally, or figuratively where we can be—a place that is for us and those closest to us and our family. This hearth supports our journey through this time.

Tiwaz is a courageousness surfacing (note: I was told explicitly that it’s not to be named courage in this reading, but courageousness). It feels strong; however, it will be building subtly and gradually. It won’t come all at once. It does not signify one courageous act. It will build gradually as we sit with the depths of Laguz, and maybe, eventually, it will help us to look more deeply into these depths.

Ehwaz says there will be forward movement. This movement will be inspired by and encouraged by the building courageousness. It is an energy where we’re sitting with the depths of Laguz but also engaging with the world as we move towards the new seed and new harvest.

Bjarka landed in an orbit more distant from Laguz and the other runes. It is a nurturing energy of rebirth, but it feels as if it’s just checking things out. It’s circling and not engaging directly in this process. It’s watching how things will unfold. It feels as if it could be a greater energy behind this time, this journey with Laguz, but the energy of Bjarka is not totally committed yet. Maybe it’s waiting to see what we’re going to do with the messages of this time, or maybe it’s waiting to know what the next shape of this journey will be. It feels as if it’s watching and perhaps sprinkling its energy, but it’s not totally committed to lending its supportive energy of rebirth to the process yet.

I hope you are inspired by, or simply enjoy being curious about this reading, especially as it unpacks over time. If you’re interested in learning more about the runes, Kari Tauring’s “The Runes: A Deeper Journey” app offers an interesting place to start. Blessings of the shoulder season and all the change and transition that it promises 🌷

Warmly,
Kathryn
